Funding agreement expedites two projects

Two road projects will now advance after the Tuscaloosa County Road Improvement Commission unanimously approved amended funding agreements with the city of Tuscaloosa.

The widening of Jack Warner Parkway and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, expected to cost about $23.3 million, and the projected $54.5 million expansion of McWright’s Ferry Road will now be overseen by the city of Tuscaloosa.

In exchange, the Road Improvement Commission will reimburse the city’s debt service from the nearly $80 million the City Council is expected to borrow through the bond market to fund the work.

“Now,” said Tuscaloosa Mayor Walter Maddox, “we can begin the mechanics of getting the preliminary engineering on both projects and putting together our financial plan.”

The mayor said the Jack Warner Parkway/Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard project could begin construction by spring or summer 2018.

Construction on the McWright’s Ferry Road expansion, he said, will take a bit longer to get under way. That’s expected to begin around January 2019.

Both projects are expected to take 20 to 24 months to complete, he said.
