Walt Maddox energizes supporters in Huntsville, addresses Gov. Ivey’s accusations

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Alabama democratic gubernatorial nominee was in the Rocket City Wednesday, energizing his supporters to turn the state blue.

Walt Maddox told WZDX News that Huntsville is a vital piece to winning the election and his campaign strategy will not change even though Governor Kay Ivey refuses to debate him.

The Tuscaloosa mayor says he’ll continue to show where he stands on the issues, something he says Ivey isn’t doing by refusing to debate.

“She would prefer not to answer to the people that pays her salary,” Maddox said. “I take a different tactic. I believe in the people of Alabama.”

Ivey accused Maddox of not giving straight answers on abortion, gun rights, and what he thinks of President Trump’s Supreme Court pick. Maddox says his stances have been clear.

“We are pro-life,” he said. “We certainly believe there needs to be exemptions when it comes to health of the mother, rape, or incest. We believe in the second amendment and my record in Tuscaloosa demonstrates that over 13 years. And when it comes to Judge Kavanaugh, we need to let the Senate do their job and trust in Senator Shelby and Senator Jones to make the right decisions.”

Maddox says where he and Ivey differ the most is in the direction they want to take the state.

“We’re gonna still talk about expanding Medicaid to help our hospital systems,” he listed. “Having the Alabama educational lottery’s gonna provide college scholarships, universal pre-K. We’re gonna talk about rebuilding our roads and repaving our bridges, making certain that I-565 gets expanded.”

He’s put forth policy proposals for these issues.
