Walt’s Plan to Save Pre-existing Condition Coverage

Under Kay Ivey’s administration, the State of Alabama joined a lawsuit seeking to repeal the rules that require health insurance companies to cover pre-existing conditions. This unconscionable action is directly against the best interests of the people of Alabama. The law that the Governor and Attorney General are attacking ended the common practice of insurance companies denying coverage or raising premiums for medical conditions that existed prior to the insurance taking effect. Conditions like heart […]

Walt’s Plan to Increase Voter Participation

Voting is the most important way a citizen contributes to democracy, so we should strengthen Alabama by doing everything we can to improve voter participation. Considering Alabama’s dismal rate of voter registration, low turnout of those who are registered, and the fact that the winner only gets a little more than half the votes in any given race, the truth is that only about 10% of our state’s population will actually decide who our state’s […]

Walt’s Public Safety Plan

“Alabama State Troopers at dangerously low levels” one discouraging headline recently reminded us. Since 2010 roadway fatalities in our state have risen an alarming 155%, while at the same time Alabama has dropped State Trooper staffing to a third of the level it should be. Walt’s Plan to Promote Ethics and Fight Corruption in Government

Bringing back ethical government in Alabama starts at the top. One commentator recently said Alabama citizens have grown to expect their politicians to be corrupt and so are not that alarmed by the never-ending scandals that led Illinois State University’s Institute for Corruption Studies to rank Alabama as the most corrupt state when it comes to “legal corruption” — conduct by public officials that is technically legal but clearly unethical; and second in “illegal corruption,” […]

Walt’s Plan for Our Crumbling Roads and Bridges

Roads and bridges carry much more than just families in cars and cargo in trucks; they are the pathways for the economic engines that support job and wage growth. Unfortunately, Alabama bridges receive a grade of C- from the American Society of Civil Engineers, and our roads earn a dismal D+. These embarrassing grades mean that 20% of Alabama’s bridges are in urgent need of improvement and our roads rate as “poor & at risk.” […]
